Whistling subs, rusty amens, spine-shuddering stabs…. Infrared continue their audio assault with a rampant five-track homage to drum & bass music’s most formative stage: jungle.
Label mainstays Wickaman and Hoodlum initiate proceedings with a serious call to action: ‘All Jungalist’ opens with classic synth breezes before the beats skip into the mix and we’re whisked away into a world of bass mayhem.
Fellow label regulars Rewind follow with ‘Come Selecta’. Rolling with a groove that screams undiluted murderation, it comes complete with a well-executed spattering of nostalgic samples and another absurdly mischievous bassline
Next up, ‘Renegade Skank’: A special dedication from Wickaman, Hoodlum & Mavrik, the emphasis here is on jungle’s most influential source; reggae. Loaded with a party skank so rude it would make Shy FX blush, it’s horn-tooting heaven guaranteed to make induce major bounce action.
Rewind rear their mysterious faces once again on ‘Keep You Free’. A head-nod to a later stage in the jungle drum & bass timeline, it’s a sweet-souled roller sprung with a shimmering string sample and yet another wobbly-bottomed bassline.
Wickaman & Hoodlum complete this historic package with ‘Consciousness’. Rooted in the past but clearly focused on the future, the dark vibes and spliced bass cut n’ paste action conjures up memories of Ram Trilogy and early Virus releases while retaining a vibe that’s distinctly their own.
Five mighty party pieces on one EP: like the General never actually said… Jungle is indeed massive.
